Deliberations of the National Advisory Council (NAC) - Digital Collection

Visit our website at https://libguides.brown.edu/nac . The National Advisory Council, constituted by the United Progressive Alliance as an advisory body to the Prime Minister, first between 2004 and 2007, and then between 2010 and 2014, left a lasting impact in shaping social policy in India and played a significant role in building on the constitutional promise of a rights-based welfare state. NAC was credited by many for bringing the rights agenda into the center of public discourse on welfare in the country and supporting landmark legislations such as the the Right to Information Act, National Rural Employment Guarantee, and the Forest Rights Act. This archive will comprise of important documents that highlights the rigor and criticality of work conducted through meeting minutes, reports, and insights from contributors and members alike. There is no in-depth record and analysis of how the NAC itself worked, and when the NAC ceased functioning in 2014, the website which should have continued as an archive of its work has been pulled down and there are no records available to the public. This digital archive is an attempt to answer some crucial questions about its role and create a public archive of its work. Collection DOI: https://doi.org/10.26300/7517-5139
