Abstract (lang="eng")
The article reports on the influx of Syrian refugees into Europe in 2015 through the Mediterranean Sea. Topics discussed include the legal protection obligations of the European Union countries against their broad immigration control powers, the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights on the Hirsi Jamaa case, the region's response to the migration crisis, and the contribution of the Law of the Sea arbitral award to the harmonization of the competing rights and obligations existing at sea.
