The article discusses whether developments in the Arctic have global consequences and what steps are needed to ensure that the Arctic remains a zone of peace and strengthen the resilience of the region's socioecological systems. It examines the policy agenda of what is regarded as the new Arctic and turns to an appraisal of the implications of such agenda shifts for efforts to sustain and enhance international cooperation in the Arctic. It looks at the role of the Arctic Council and identifies and comments on some concrete steps that are politically feasible and likely to improve the prospects for cooperative approaches to Arctic issues in the future.
