  <mods:abstract lang="eng"> 
 The article discusses the alternative models of democracy in Latin America. It notes that democratization in the region have begun since the early 1990s which range from decolonizing democratizations to democratizations without sovereignty or through invasions. The democracies of various countries in the region are explored which has lead to the conclusion that the dimensions of democracy are valued in every national context. A comparison of the liberal and republican models of democracy is presented in which the former is said to be the socialization of the citizenry into a particular conception of their civil and political rights while the latter requires political participation and social mobilization.
