An interview with Romano Prodi, professor-at-large at Brown University in Rhode Island and former Italian prime minister, is presented. When asked about his motivation for leaving academia for politics, he mentions his opposition to the values represented by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. According to Prodi, the public opinion politics divide is not a characteristic of Italy. He also cites some of the significant challenges he faced as president of the European Union (EU) Commission, one of which is EU enlargement.
