 The article discusses the efforts of the U.S. to deal with Iran and its revolutionary ideology without a well grounded understanding of what motivates and inspires Iranians, or why their revolution was a great turning point in their country's history. Former President James Carter probably lost his bid for re-election because of his handling of the Islamic revolution in Iran. The U.S. government was not equipped to deal with the phenomenon of an Islamic revolution, which is centered in the world of Shiite Islam. The eight-year Iran-Iraq war would be the defining event of the Islamic Republic's early history. Ronald Reagan, the successor of Carter, was spared the embassy hostage drama, only to be snared in another hostage ordeal in Lebanon.
