An interview with Vijay Nambiar, chief of staff for the secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), is presented. He says that Kofi Annan has attained the peak of his achievements in the sense of his being at the end of his tenure. He thinks that the kinds of challenges the UN faces today are different from the ones it encountered even ten years ago. He also thinks that the UN has changed almost unrecognizably since the 1940s, when the mode of election of the secretary-general was first ruled
