Abstract
A reproduction of a painting of one of the classrooms of the Salpêtrière Hospital by Tony Robert-Fleury. By the late 18th century, the hospital served as a teaching facility, and some of the classroom held paintings representing major advances in psychiatric medicine. Presented at the Salon of 1876, this painting represents the father of modern psychiatric care, Philippe Pinel, who was intrumental in developping more humane treatment for mentally ill patients. In this painting, Pinel is metaphorically liberating the patients he visits by ordering their chains be removed.
