Remembering Dr. George Monteiro: The Tale of 'A Fish Head'

Description

Abstract:
Excerpt: Ahead of a 2017 trip to Lisbon, I emailed a few friends who had visited the city often over the years, seeking recommendations of typical Portuguese restaurants they thought my husband and I might enjoy. The most intriguing reply arrived from George Monteiro, who also attached to his email a typescript of his poem “A Fish Head.” This work, which he had composed in memory of his late mother, is set in the Restaurante O Polícia – “The Policeman,” named for its founder, a former police officer – an eatery popular with local lawmen when it opened in 1900. George added, “I was told once that this poem of mine was on the wall [at the initiative of Teresa Martins Marques, but] I don't know if it is still there (or, for that matter, ever was).” A sleuthing adventure – accompanied by the prospect of a good meal (judging by the online menu) – was a combination too delectable to resist, so I printed out a framable copy of the poem to bring along.
