<mods:abstract type="general" displayLabel="Scope and Contents note">In this interview, Kloey Albertson, Brown University class of 2027, discusses her four years of active duty service in the United States Army and her transition to and experience at Brown. Albertson begins by talking about her childhood in Saint Joseph, Missouri, and highlights that her family, including her grandfathers, inspired and motivated her military and academic careers. She explains that she pursued one year of pre-med undergraduate work at Northwest Missouri State University but wanted to take time off to figure out her passion and interests. She discusses feeling called to military service and the guidance her grandfathers gave her in the process. Albertson recalls how she selected both the Army and her occupational specialty as a human intelligence collector. She shares memories from her time in basic training as well as her experience of the COVID-19 pandemic while in advanced individual training. She goes on to describe the challenges of military culture as a woman and specifically talks about how difficult it was to build community and find support for concerns. She goes on to share how she learned about Brown University through Service to Schools, a non-profit organization that provides free college and grad school application counseling to military veterans and service members. She emphasizes how Brown’s commitment to military affiliated students and the open curriculum quickly made Brown her top-choice school. Albertson notes her transition from active duty to the Army Reserve in 2023 and describes some of the challenges she faced in her first year at Brown. She also briefly discusses her work with the Student Veterans Society. In closing, Albertson describes all of the ways she feels supported as a student veteran on campus and asserts that Brown is the best school for military affiliated students.</mods:abstract>
<mods:note type="biographical/historical" displayLabel="Biographical/historical note">Kloey Albertson grew up in Saint Joseph, Missouri, with a tight knit family. She graduated from Central High School and pursued one year of pre-med courses at Northwest Missouri State University. After feeling uncertain about this path, Albertson enlisted in the United States Army in 2019. She served in the Army for four years on active duty as a human intelligence collector. While serving, Albertson worked with Service to Schools, a non-profit organization that provides free college and grad school application counseling to military veterans and service members. There, she learned about Brown University’s investment in military affiliated students as well as the open curriculum. She enthusiastically applied and was accepted in 2023. That same year, Albertson got off of active duty, transitioned to the Army Reserve, and began her education at Brown in the fall. She is concentrating in biophysics and is expected to graduate in 2027. She serves as the President of the Student Veterans Society and as a mentor in the Battle Buddies program through the Office of Military Affiliated Students. Albertson also continues her work as a human intelligence collector instructor with the Army Reserve.</mods:note>
