Abstract
This thesis investigates two primary topics related to superhydrophobic surfaces. The first topic is the manufacture and characterization of superhydrophobic surfaces. The theories relating to the manufacture of these surfaces are investigated. Important concepts such as the location of the initial air-water interface within the surface roughness are discussed, and several different manufacturing processes are examined in the context of the goals of this work. The final manufacturing process is described in detail. The Cassie-Wenzel transition pressure of the manufactured surfaces is also investigated.In the second part, the effects on skin friction of the manufactured superhydrophobic surfaces in laminar and turbulent Poiseuille flows are examined. The results are compared to flows over smooth flat channel walls and discussed in the context of the existing literature. The form of the surface roughness appears to be critical to affecting skin friction in both laminar and turbulent flows. Methods available for extracting skin friction from turbulent velocity data are discussed in detail in Appendix A.
