Abstract
"Lynching and the Archive: A History," studies lynching images alongside their patterns of circulation as well as the way that they have been presented in museum exhibitions, cataloged in archives, used for commemoration in memorials and framed for scholarly study. It offers an historical and theoretical account of lynching photographs, arguing that lynching photography developed after slavery as way to continue to share African-Americans as commodities, making image creation and circulation constitutive parts of lynching as racial violence. "Lynching and the Archive" uses exhibitions, memorials, literary texts and philosophical works, in addition to photography, to understand lynching as a part of a continuum of racial violence which includes colonialism, the transatlantic slave trade, rape as a tool of terror, segregation and police brutality.
