Through an exploration of the streetlight, one can see how a ubiquitous and almost invisible object can impact navigational choices and inform behavior and social interaction. Beginning from a theoretical query this dissertation asks how an infra-ordinary object can relate to space and place? This thesis illustrates how this research on space, place, the everyday and notions of public developed into an art project where streetlights are used as a sound-producing object. Resulting in a series of individual projects, including an instrument for concert performance, the primary focus in this dissertation is an installation titled liminal/subLiminal. This two-room installation used amplified street lighting fixtures in one room, and video representations of streetlights turning on at night in another room. Situating the art practice within the context of the critical theory of space, place, and the Everyday, this reveals and art practice that can engage with the world critically and politically, through subtle tactics of appropriation of an infrastructural everyday objects.
