    <mods:abstract lang="eng">For social sciences, festivities of Portuguese-American communities in New England work to solve questions of identity and community. But observable discordances form between tradition and innovation. As it happens, appraising the arraial suits Madeiran feast traditions. Provided are three, creative appraisals informed by authorities and arguments in the history of philosophy. Remarkable interchanges between philosophy and world feast traditions form. For philosophy, arraials flourish with commitments to wise, knowledgeable expertise, observant thinking, and intellectual exchange. </mods:abstract>
