From soup to nuts: How a family recipe drove me crazy searching for my Azorean roots

Description

Abstract:
Excerpt: I confess that as a child I was a picky eater: if I’d never tried a food, I was positive I wouldn’t like it. So of course I had no interest in the watercress soup my mother fixed once or twice each spring as a special treat for my father. Washing grit-filled cress was hard work, yet she did it because she loved my dad and he loved the soup. But uncharacteristically, my parents made no effort to get me to try any, unlike our epic battles over lima beans and especially liver.
