Sex Differences in Thrombotic Complications in Patients with COVID-19
Abstract
The following retrospective study aimed to elucidate some of these connections between sex, thrombotic complications, and COVID-19 through the analysis of 1380 COVID-positive patient records from two major hospitals. Primary aims included describing the rate of thrombotic complications (acute IS, AMI, and PE/DVT) among patients with COVID-19, and investigating the relationship between inflammatory/coagulation biomarkers and thrombotic events during hospitalization. We also aimed to investigate sex differences in rates of other clinical outcomes including disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), admission to an intensive care unit (ICU), and in-hospital mortality. Our ultimate goal through this research is to report associated biomarker thresholds for each model, and to see if any of the relationships analyzed could potentially lead to the development of sex-specific risk prediction models for thrombotic events with a significant association with arterial or venous thrombotic events.
