- Abstract
- This interview is with Catherine Little Bert, owner of Bert Gallery at 540 South Water Street in Providence. The interview took place at her gallery on a Saturday morning before it opened for the day. Bertâs parents were from Rhode Island and of Irish descent. When she was born in 1955 her parents were living in Austria because her father was in the military. She lived abroad with her family until the age of thirteen. Upon returning to the United States, Bertâs family re-settled in Mount Pleasant and she attended the now-defunct St. Xavierâs, an all-girls Catholic high school that was located downtown. She then attended Providence College, while living at home in Mount Pleasant. She also holds a Masters in Psychology from the University of Connecticut.The majority of the interview discusses her business, Bert Gallery, which was located first in the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Providence (from 1985 to 1991) and then at its present location at 540 South Water Street, in the Corliss Landing Building, in an area that can be considered part of Fox Point. One major topic of discussion in the interview is the highway overpass that separates the area in which the gallery is located from the rest of Fox Point and the Wickenden Street area. Other topics of discussion are: downtown Providence in the 1960s and 70s, the business and residential communities in the areas surrounding each of the galleryâs locations, the Providence arts community, the Hurricane Barrier, the development of Corliss Landing â a mixed-use historic building, Bertâs decision to move the gallery to its present location, Al Fornoâs Restaurant, and historic Providence artists.
