- Oral history interview with Sister Mary Michella Campbell about life in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence, RI.
- Note:
biographical
- Sister Mary Michella Campbell was born Jeanette Ellen Campbell in Providence, Rhode Island in June 1925. She is the daughter of Ellen Whitty Campbell, a lifelong Fox Point resident, and Thomas Charles Campbell. Sister Michella had five siblings; two sisters, Regina and Gertrude Campbell and three brothers, Francis, Thomas, and Robert Campbell. All five Campbell children were educated at the Cleary School in Fox Point, just adjacent to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church where the Whitty family had been long-time members. Sister Mary Michella received a scholarship to attend St. Mary's Academy, Bayview in East Providence for grades 10-12. Upon graduating from St. Mary's Academy in 1942 at the age of 17, Sister Mary Michella entered the Sisters of Mercy through the novitiate at Mount St. Rita's in Cumberland, Rhode Island. After taking her vows, Sister Mary Michella embarked on what would be a 47-year career as a schoolteacher in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Sister Mary Michella's family remained long-term residents of Fox Point until the late 1960s when they were forced to relocate to Branch Street in Providence. In the 1970s, Sister Mary Michella was given permission by the Sisters of Mercy to return to her family's home to care for her niece, Jeanne, who had been paralyzed as a child as a consequence of Polio. Sister Mary Michella lived at home with her family until 2006 when she suffered from a broken hip. For the past four years, she has been living in Mount Saint Rita's Health Center in Cumberland, RI.
