- Abstract
- Oral history interview with John (Jack) MacManus about life in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence, RI.
- Note:
biographical
- John (Jack) MacManus was born on July 18, 1943, at what is now the Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island. One of six children born into an established, working-class family with Irish roots, Jack grew up in Fox Point and has spent most of his life, with the exception of several years of schooling, living in Fox Point. He continues to reside at the home on 7 East Street that his parents purchased from his Irish grandparents back in the 1940s. Down the street from his house is St. Josephs Catholic Church, the Irish church of Fox Point. Jack has been a lifelong parishioner, from his attendance at Cleary School as a child, to his current position in the church's choir. After attending Providence Catholic schools through high school, Jack went on to college and spent some time living with the Benedictine order. He eventually decided to become a teacher and came back to Providence to live and work. Jack taught middle school in the Providence school system for over thirty years before retiring in 2000. As a lifelong member of the northern portion of Fox Point, Jack offers insights into growing up in Fox Point during the post-war years from the perspective of an Irish American. His decisions to become involved in the Fox Point Neighborhood Association and other organization interested in preserving Fox Point also make him very knowledge about the neighborhoods changing demographics and politics.
