          <mods:abstract>The Battle of Solferino, fought on June 24, 1859. This battle resulted in the victory of the allied French Army under Napoleon III and Sardinian Army under Victor Emmanuel II against the Austrian Army under Emperor Franz Joseph. The battle took place near the village of Solferino, Italy, between Milan and Verona. This battle was very costly in terms of human losses. Jean-Henri Dunant, who witnessed the battle, was motivated by the suffering of the wounded soldiers and began a campaign that eventually resulted in the Geneva Conventions and the establishment of the International Red Cross.</mods:abstract>
