          <mods:abstract>This image portrays the triumphant entry of Sardinian King Victor Emanuel II (saluting) and general Giuseppe Garibaldi (to his right) in Naples on November 7, 1860. The local population celebrated the liberation from the Bourbonic rule by hands of Garibaldi's army, which had occupied Naples on September 7. On October 21, a wide majority of the population of the defeated Kingdom of Naples had voted for the annexation of the Bourbonic southern territories to the northern Kingdom of Sardinia, which was to be renamed Kingdom of Italy only a few months later. On March 17, 1861, the newly-constituted Italian Parliament elected Victor Emanuel as the first King of Italy. Shortly after the November 7 celebrations portrayed in this image, Garibaldi retired to the island of Caprera, declining to accept any reward for his services towards the unification of the peninsula.</mods:abstract>
