<mods:abstract>This equestrian portrait illustrates General Giuseppe Garibaldi and his black servant/aide during the Siege of Rome, lauched by the French troops between June 3rd and July 2nd of 1849 to bring the newly-proclaimed capital of the Roman Republic back into the papal hands. The caption above the image describes Garibaldi's clothing full of bullet holes and carrying the marks of the battle. It also tells us that his black companion died in the last night of fighting. Garibaldi withdrew from Rome on July 2nd.</mods:abstract>
