<mods:abstract>This image portrays Garibaldi surrounded by the Bourbon cavalry at the Battle of Milazzo, fought between July 17 and 20, 1860. The battle was part of the Sicilian Expedition and resulted in Garibaldi's thousand-men army, backed up by Sicilian volunteers (the "picciotti") and members of the Piedmontese army (not wearing the regular uniform to avoid political speculations), defeating the Bourbon troops of Colonel Bosco. This drawing probably refers to a key episode of the battle, which took place in the afternoon of July 20, when a sieged Garibaldi was rescued by the Sicilian "picciotti" and, subsequently, led his party to final victory.</mods:abstract>
