- Abstract
- The upper illustration shows the arrival of Prince Eugene of Savoy-Carignan in Florence. A cousin of Victor Emmanuel, Prince Eugene was one of his Lieutenant Generals and Governor (Staathalter) of Florence. The accompanying article states that the people of Florence welcomed him as a fellow Florentine since the prince was born there. The next illustration shows Victor Emmanuel arriving for the opening of the Italian Parliament in Turin. The Sardinian chamber of deputies convened in Turin's Palazzo Carignano (where Victor Emmanuel was born) from 1848 to 1860 and then the Italian Parliament met there between 1861 and 1864 . Turin was the capital of unified Italy during these years before the capital was moved to Florence in 1864 and then Rome in 1871.
