Abstract
In the Third War for Italian Independence in 1866, Victor Emmanuel led an army into Venetia to capture the region from the Austrians. He crossed the Mincio River with his troops only to be defeated at the Battle of Custoza. Although Italy was militarily defeated, it soon acquired Venetia because, in seeking peace with Prussia following the Austo-Prussian War of 1866, Austria agreed to divest itself of the region by giving it to Napoleon III of France, who in turn ceded it to Italy.
