Abstract
At the carnival in Rome in 1849, attendees wore liberty caps and were cheered as they passed the Republican Café while any attendants in livery were hissed and hooted. This scene depicts one of the closing revels showing the crowd carrying lighted tapers and trying to put out each other's taper with a handkerchief or towel. After this goes on for about an hour, a gun is fired, the lights are put out and people eiher go home or to the ball; this lasts till eleven o'clock when the carnival is over and the fasting begins.
