Two days earlier the Anglo-Dutch fleet bombarded Algiers for 9 hours, in retaliation for the Dey's violation of a previous anti-slavery treaty. The Dey agreed to the expedition's demands, including large sums to compensate the British consul for loss of property. 1,200 Christians abducted from Naples and Sicily were repatriated.
