    <mods:abstract>Napoleon (l.) encounters Charles James Fox (r.) and greets him as an old friend. Fox is resplendent in the clothing of a fine gentleman and pretends not to know Bonaparte is ordering him to leave. Typically Fox is depicted in plain, worn clothing that is often used to signal a disreputable character and revolutionary tendencies. The implication is that as a Minister of the court--elegantly dressed with powdered hair and a bag wig--Fox, like Napoleon, dresses to play the part.
