- Abstract:
- Napoleon stands in the drawing room of his house on Elba. Toy soldiers are lined up in squadrons all over the study floor. Napoleon stands in their midst and directs them with his sword. He is very likely re-imagining one of his unsuccessful battles as a victory. A door behind him (right) opens onto the street. A group of men crowd into the entry and laugh at his meager efforts. In the back left corner of the room, a table has been disturbed: chairs are overturned and a map lies in pieces. Several toy soldiers lie face down on the floor or are left in their boxes.
