  <mods:abstract>A copy by Rowlandson after a German caricature titled "Der Rheinische Courier/ verlierht auf der Heimreise von der Leipziger Messer alles," this sheet depicts Napoleon as a courier or a footman. Napoleon runs on a path that borders a river on the other side of which the city of Mainz punctuates the skyline with cathedral spires and tall buildings. A rucksack on his back flaps open, allowing maps of Holland, Switzerland, Rhein-Bund, Hanstat Department, Poland and Italy, as well as images labeled Junge Garde and Alte Garde to spill out. Napoleon is portly and has dark stubble on his face. His expression is one of concentration. The staff he runs with is topped by a small statue of Charlemagne enthroned, a symbol of French imperial power. A hare, indicating speed, springs ahead of Napoleon.
