- Abstract
- Napoleon bows over a baptismal font. At the far left, a portly bishop dips his hand in the water and commands William Pitt, standing at the far right, to "Name this Child." Pitt bows low responding, "Deliverer of Europe & Pacificator of the World." Wilberforce and Hawkesbury stand between Napoleon and Pitt. Hawkesbury, at the center right, wears a woman's coat and bonnet over his own clothing and cautions, "You need not say anything about the March to Paris." Wilberforce, standing at center left, expresses, "I hope that he will abolish the Slave Trade."
- Note
- Published by Fores, 1801-10-26. British Museum, BM 9733. George notes that Pitt's response to the bishop refers to his sppech of 17 Feb., 1800. For Pitt, all the evils and threats of the French Revolution were 'centered and condensed in one man [Napoleon] who was raised and nourished in its bosom, where celebrity was gained under its auspices, who was at once the child and champion of its horrors.'
