The revellers have lit a large bonfire, (r.), perhaps in preparation to burn an effigy of Napoleon held aloft at the left of the sheet. Caught up in the frenzy, the figures in the foreground of the image tear into a large Bull carcass set upon a platform in the center of the image. In this satire of English gluttony, the crowds gorge themselves on the dead animal and pitchers of ale. Significantly, Cruikshank has included several landmarks of the city; the spires of the cathedral and church towers form a backdrop to the chaotic scene. Published by Thomas Tegg, 1813-11-22.
