Abstract:
German soldier strangling woman with child nearby; a man being attacked near burning cottage watched by other soldiers. Inscribed in pencil, lower right: "Geo. Bellows J.B.B." by artist's daughter, Jean Bellows Booth. From the War Series.
Notes:
This print was used as an advertisement for U.S. Government Bonds Fourth Liberty Loan, which appeared on the inside back cover of Collier's Magazine, September 28, 1918, and Everybody's Magazine, October 1918.
The original caption read: 'This is Kultur. There is no sharper contrast between German Kultur and the civilization that our forefathers died for, than the difference in the attitude of the two civilizations towards women and children'.
