Abstract
2 pages representing the Theater of Montmartre. The first page shows a blueprint of the first floor of the theater as well as the grounds on which it is sitting. The second page represents three engravings as follows: two drawings of the facade and side of the theater; a cross-section drawing of the theatre.
Note
Extensive foxing on both pages.
Note
This theater is part of a series of suburban theaters built, owned and operated by the Seveste family to whom a privilege to own and operate theaters in the Parisian immediate suburbs was granted by King Louis XVIII, in recognition of the help of Seveste père in finding the buried bodies of the deceased royal family (Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette and daughter) after the Revolution. This enabled the family to draw considerable revenues from taxes and tickets from their theaters. As is the case with other theaters owned by the Seveste family, the Theater of Montmartre eventually became part of Paris' city theaters, when Montmartre became a borough of Paris in 1860. The Seveste also owned and operated the Théâtre des Batignolles, the Théâtre de Belleville, and the Théâtre Montparnasse, enjoying a monopoly of ownership in the defunct Département de Seine.
