Abstract
Malaria is a deadly, infectious, but also preventable disease. Despite ongoing efforts in the development of intervention strategies against malaria, drug resistance mandates innovation that would not only bring efficacious anti-malarials but also therapeutics that can capture and eradicate malaria across continents, overcoming the burden of multi-drug resistant strains. This study focuses on exploring a potential antimalarial compound through the use of growth inhibition assays to assess its efficacy at attenuating growth of both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant parasite strains, establish an understanding of the compound’s potency through calculating half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) for each of the respective strains, and evaluate the toxicity of the compound across various mammalian cell lines. Ultimately, the study lays the groundwork for establishing robust, clinically relevant in-vivo safety and toxicity studies; and contributes to the overarching research efforts in identifying and validating an anti-malarial agent that will be efficacious in overcoming the current antimalarial drug-resistance-driven limitations.
