Plato's Lesser Hippias: Translation and Commentary

Description

Abstract:
This dissertation is an attempt to make Plato’s _Lesser Hippias_ more accessible to students of Plato and Ancient Greek. It consists of two main parts: (1) a new English translation of the dialogue, working from John Burnet’s 1903 Oxford Classical Text; (2) a detailed grammatical commentary on Plato’s Greek text, using Liddell and Scott’s _A Greek-English Lexicon_, H. W. Smyth’s _Greek Grammar_, J. D. Denniston’s _The Greek Particles_, and Plato’s other dialogues as its primary guides. The commentary points toward Plato’s philosophy and literary art, but it is not an analysis of the literary or philosophical aspects of the dialogue; it is a grammatical commentary intended to serve as the basis for such analyses. The translation is preceded by a summary of the dialogue.
