Abstract (lang="eng"): Mario Quintana is the poet of Porto Alegre. It is very common for a poet to identify with his or her city; it is uncommon for a city to identify with a poet. This article argues that Quintana's poetry has become a common discourse chared by all porto-alegrenses and that the figure of the poety contributed to the construction of a collective identity. This text analyzes "O mapa," one of the best known poems of Quintana, and it explores the relationship between the two systems: city and language, both impossible to grasp not only because of their size but also because they are being continually reconstituted. City and language permit a social interaction while at the same time limiting its possibilities--with its streets and with grammar. The city's love for this poet is manifested in the moment in which the city presents itself as an unfamiliar space. The poem imagines the city as a body that will never be entirely visible. The poem is also the prophecy that, in the future, the haunting of the city--when the poet becomes "a bit of the nothing" circulating through the wind and the streets--will reveal the only possible way to overcome the divide between those who walk in what remains of the city.

Este ensaio tem como argumento que a poesia de Quintana se tornou um discurso compartilhado por todos os porto-alegrenses e que a figura do poeta contribuiu para a construção de uma identidade coletiva. Oferece uma análise de "O mapa," um dos mais conhecidos poemas do autor, e explora a relação entre dois sistemas: cidade e idioma, ambos sistemas impossíveis de abranger não só por seu tamanho mas também por serem continuamente reconstituídos. A cidade e o idioma permitem uma interação social ao mesmo tempo que lhe limitam as possibilidades - com as ruas e com a gramática. O amor do poeta pela cidade se manifesta no momento em que a cidade se apresenta como um espaço desconhecido. O poema imagina a cidade como um corpo que nunca será inteiramente visível. O poema é também a profecia de que, no futuro, a assombração da cidade - quando o poeta virar "um pouco do nada" circulando no vento e pelas ruas - revelará a única maneira possível de superar a divisão entre o caminhante e a cidade sobrevivente.
