Abstract (lang="eng")
This essay offers a broader methodological reflection on João Dionísio’s and Maria João Sousa’s study of the organisation of the Duke of Parma document witnesses within Fernando Pessoa’s archive. Adopting a bird’s-eye perspective, the article examines organising not merely as a practical archival activity, but as a theoretical and interpretative problem involving materiality, labelling, temporality, and archival relations. The discussion draws on recent archival theory, particularly the Records in Contexts (RiC) model, alongside the metaphor of the archive as a “sluice box”, in order to explore how fragmentary materials are selected, structured, and interpreted across changing scholarly and institutional contexts. The essay further reflects on the temporal and methodological tensions involved in reading, organising, and reconstructing fragmentary literary materials within contemporary textual scholarship and digital archival research.
