- Healthcare prices in the United States are high, variable, and opaque. A lack of transparent
pricing information limits competition, stifles innovation, and prevents both patients and
healthcare purchasers from understanding the true price of healthcare. It also prevents
regulators and policymakers from ensuring healthy market competition. Although the US
leads the world in healthcare spending, high and variable prices have not been shown to
reflect an increase in quality, but are rather driven by provider consolidation and market
power.
