Covid-19 Disparities in the LatinX Community: What is the Rhode Island Experience?

Description

Abstract:
Globally 123 million cases and 2.71 million deaths are attributable to Covid-19. The Covid-19 pandemic disproportionately disadvantages historically vulnerable populations by exacerbating existing inequalities.10,11 Hispanic/ LatinX (LatinX), individuals comprise the largest ethnic minority group in the U.S. Understanding trends nationally, statewide, and by municipal, will elucidate how the Rhode Island LatinX experience compares, and provide insight into future care for this population. Compare rates of Covid-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths in the LatinX community on multiple scales. Understand the socio-cultural factors that influence the Covid-19 experience in the LatinX community. This multi-method study combined analysis of public access data and expert literature review. Data accessed from the CDC, RIDH, and US Census Bureau. 16 of 39 municipals were chosen as representatives. Analysis and comparisons of data completed using Microsoft Excel. As of March 5, 202 a total of 28.8 million cases, 150,690 hospitalizations, and 520,760 deaths due to Covid-19 occurred Nationally. LatinX individuals represent 18.5% of the total US population, yet account for 20.7% of cases, 20.30% of hospitalizations, and 12.2% of deaths. In Rhode Island, 120,820 reported cases, 8,959 hospitalizations, and 2,517 deaths due to Covid-19 occurred. The LatinX community comprises 16.3% of the Rhode Island population, yet represents 30% of cases, 26% of hospitalizations, and 10% of deaths. Municipals with greater LatinX populations have higher rates of cases and hospitalizations. Across all three scales the LatinX community was underrepresented in deaths due to Covid-19. Despite comprising a smaller proportion of the total population, LatinX individuals in Rhode Island constitute a larger percentage of cases and hospitalizations. Literature review indicates residential segregation, geographical concentration, and state size may play a role in this divergence from national trends. Socio-cultural factors such as SES, multigenerational housing, comorbidities, language barrier, access to health care, and immigration status largely influence the Covid-19 experience in the LatinX community. The underrepresentation of LatinX individuals in rates of death due to Covid-19 should be further studied as it pertains to patient care after diagnosis, however; preliminary study indicates that age may play a role in this observed trend.
