<mods:abstract>Exercises of Troops in Temple Grounds, "Simoda" [sic Shimoda], Japan. Elephant folio of the American troops running military exercises with Japanese onlookers in Shimoda, after the Treaty of Kanagawa was signed. Perry chose to impress the Japanese with the United States military prowess- depicted here are demonstrations of artillery fire and infantry exercises. On the right, a group of Americans are lined up, following instruction from the officer in blue jacket, and white pants. In the right corner, the American band plays. Other exercises run in the background. The Japanese onlookers are pictured in the left foreground and in the center background. Heine reproduces the landscape and temple architecture adeptly. </mods:abstract>

<mods:note>"To Commodore M.C. Perry. Officers and men of the Japan Expedition this print is respectfully dedicated by their Obt.Servts, Heine and Brown." </mods:note>
