Military exercises

Description

Abstract:
Fourth panel of a silk-bound scroll by an anonymous Japanese artist of the American troops running military exercises. Blue and white banners fence in the officers. The artist may have chosen to use blue instead of black, black and white being the Imperial colors of the Tokugawa shogunate. Two groups of officers are marching with bayonets. From the left corner, the band enters the pictorial space. The house on the left may have been the Treaty house, where the Americans and Japanese held their diplomatic hearings.
Notes:
Part of a 12-panel scroll by an anonymous Japanese artist, origin unknown, but similar to other scrolls produced during this period, such as the Black Ship Scroll.
