- Abstract:
- Sixth panel of a silk-bound scroll by an anonymous Japanese artist of Americans and Japanese examining a gear. The telegraph wire spanning a mile from the secondary station ends at the Treaty House. The focal point of this panel is the large gear. The Americans may have been demonstrating the mechanization process. The Americans appear in full Navy dress. Some Japanese wear officer dress; a jingasa [lacquered wooden helmet], an haori [short loose jacket], hakama [loose trousers], and a sword on each side. Other Japanese appear in travel attire; haori, leggings, zori [straw sandals], and two swords. In the right corner, the American band plays. Several wood buildings fill the background. The activity is fenced in by a blue and white banner, which in all probability was actually black and white, those being the Imperial colors of the Tokugawa shogunate.

- Part of a 12-panel scroll by an anonymous Japanese artist, origin unknown, but similar to other scrolls produced during this period, such as the Black Ship Scroll.
