Departure I

Description

Abstract:
Eleventh panel of a silk-bound scroll by an anonymous Japanese artist of the Americans leaving the beach on their boats. The American boats are full of officers in official Navy attire. All of the boats fly the American flag. On the beach, there are several groups of Japanese officers and officials. The Japanese officers wear a jingasa [lacquered wooden helmet], haori [short loose jacket], hakama [loose trousers], and carry lances. In the background, the Treaty House is visible as is the blue and white banner fences. The banners were probably black and white, those being the Imperial colors of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Notes:
Part of a 12-panel scroll by an anonymous Japanese artist, origin unknown, but similar to other scrolls produced during this period, such as the Black Ship Scroll.
