Twelfth panel of a silk-bound scroll by an anonymous Japanese artist of the Americans returning to their boats after the conclusion of diplomatic relations with the Japanese. The American boats are full of officers in proper Navy attire. All of the ships fly the American flag and have canons aboard. From each boat a canon is shot. All ships in the squadron are anchored. The American squadron consisted of nine ships, three steamers: Powhatan, Susqehanna, Mississippi and six sailing vessels: Macedonia, Vandalia, Saratoga, Southhampton, Lexington, and Supply. In the distance there are small Japanese junks, and farther, a mountain range is visible.
Notes:
Part of a 12-panel scroll by an anonymous Japanese artist, origin unknown, but similar to other scrolls produced during this period, such as the Black Ship Scroll.
