<mods:language xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><mods:languageTerm type="code" authority="iso639-2b">eng</mods:languageTerm><mods:languageTerm type="text">English</mods:languageTerm></mods:language><mods:abstract xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">Roudnice monastery in the Kingdom of Bohemia has fascinated scholars due to two facts regarding its cultural context; first, the Prague bishop Jan IV of Dražice (1301-1343) invited a mason from Avignon to build a bridge in the town of Roudnice, and second, the same bishop requested that only Czechs whose mother and father spoke Czech be admitted to the new monastery. Thus far, Czech scholars have discussed Roudnice monastery in the context of stylistic development of fourteenth-century Bohemia, possible influence of the French mason, and nationalistic sentiment of the patron. This dissertation will go beyond these initial studies to examine the monastery in its full medieval cultural context including the political and ecclesiastical motivations of the patron, the context and reasons for the foundation, and the functions of the monastery through the analysis of the Roudnice Statutes or monastic customs. <br/>
Jan IV was at the forefront of the growing international movement in fourteenth century Europe and became one of the most important art patrons in Bohemia. Prague was subordinate to the archdiocese of Mainz from its inception in 973, and the drive to elevate Prague to an archdiocese was a great inspiration for the bishop. Roudnice monastery introduced Augustinian regular canons to Bohemia and adopted the Augustinian customs of Saint Ruf abbey, Avignon, as a model.
