  <mods:abstract type="general" displayLabel="Scope and Contents note">Made in 2008, the monumental ironwork is dedicated to both the memory of General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas (Davy de La Pailleterie), the first Black general in France and in acknowledgment of the abolition of slavery. The memorial was dedicated on April 4, 2009, with support from UNESCO. The work, which consists of two broken shackles and iron chains, was erected on the site of Alphonse-Emmanuel de Moncel's Monument au Général Dumas (1913) The Vichy regime destroyed this statue in 1942 during the Nazi occupation of France.</mods:abstract>
