Abstract: general (displayLabel="Scope and Contents note")
With envelope postmarked Feb. 11, 1927 "I am sending you all the tales you list ... You will find both the pure horror and fantastic strains represented in this assortment - naturally I tend to veer betwixt the two, but professionally-minded people urge me to stick to horror as the more marketable commodity. I am just now reacting against this advice, as you will see from The Silver Key, which is recent. The Lurking Fear was done to order for a wretchedly sensational magazine four years ago ... Some day I may re-write it decently as a continuous unit. In [Polaris] - written in 1918 - you will see how close I came to the Dunsany style before I ever heard of Dunsany. My discovery of D. took place in the autumn of 1919, & produced a profound effect upon me - you will see instant reflections in The White Ship, Celephais, The Other Gods, The Doom that Came to Sarnath, &c. Pegana only knows when I'll get my 110-page affair typed - & the same applies to the tale on which I'm now at work, [p. 58] & which may get to 75 pages or so before its natural and logical conclusion appears. It centres around old Providence, & I shall call it either The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, or The Madness Out of Time." A long P.S. written on verso of envelope
