Abstract: Scope and contents note
With minor manuscript corrections. The story was originally written in 1920 and first published in The Wolverine, No. 9 (Mar 1921). This single-spaced typescript (probably prepared in 1922 or 1923) contains revisions that do not appear in the 1921 published version. It is one of the five typescripts that HPL submitted to Weird Tales in late-April or early-May 1923 (SL 128, HPL to James F. Morton, May 3, 1923: "Once again I have followed a Mortonian tip ... and have slipped Weird Tales five of my hell-beaters ... Dagon, Randolph Carter, Cats of Ulthar, Hound, and Arthur Jermyn." This typescript corresponds closely to the version published as "The White Ape" in Weird Tales, 3, No. 4 (Apr 1924).
