Dated by HPL: "Nov 1 - '18." "'Col. Linkaby Didd', to whom the lines are inscribed, is an imaginary character figuring frequently in the local Journal. Like Sir Roger de Coverly he is supposed to be an odd rural character, residing at 'Nooseneck Hill, in the town of Exeter' -- the most desolate and remote spot conceivable in Rhode Island. 'Col. Didd' always takes the wrong side of public questions, arguing picturesquely and illiterately, with many comic blunders and perversions of the Malaprop variety" (HPL to Rheinhart Kleiner, 1918 Nov. 25, T35: 68-70).
